GAMSAT Section 1 practice, at the pace that decides it

Section I gives you 62 humanities reasoning questions in 100 minutes — about 97 seconds per question, reading time included. Knowing how to read closely is not the skill being examined; reading closely at that pace is.

What the 62 questions actually test

Close reading

Pinning down what the text actually says — before the options try to talk you out of it.

Inference

What follows from the passage but is never stated. The exam's favourite move.

Tone & technique

Irony, register, figurative language — reading what the author is doing, not just saying.

Argument evaluation

Conclusions, assumptions, and what would strengthen or weaken a case.

The texts rotate — poems, prose fiction, essays, quotation sets, dialogues, cartoons — but the four skills above are the whole exam. The free test’s report tells you which one is costing you marks.

Try one at exam style

Written in-house for demonstration — the free test deals real bank questions like it.

“The lighthouse keeper does not curse the fog. It is the fog that pays his wage.”

The remark implies that…

A  a role’s value can depend on the very problem it exists to guard against — the keeper is employed because fog endangers ships; no fog, no wage. The remark holds the two ideas together without resolving them — that tension is the point.
B  lighthouse keepers secretly hope for shipwrecks — overreach: the remark is about the fog persisting, not about harm arriving.
C  gratitude is the proper response to danger — moralises a remark that observes an irony; nothing prescribes a response.
D  fog is less dangerous than sailors believe — contradicts the premise: the wage exists precisely because the danger is real.

Section 1 practice questions, answered

How many questions are in GAMSAT Section 1, and how long is it?

62 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes — about 97 seconds per question, with no separate reading time. It is sat in person, on the same day as Section III, about three weeks after the remote Section II writing day.

What kinds of texts appear in Section 1?

Prose fiction, poetry, argumentative and reflective essays, sets of quotations on a shared theme, dialogues and interviews, and occasionally cartoons or social-science data. Every question reasons from the stimulus in front of you — no outside knowledge is assumed.
