Where your essay goes. Your writing is sent overseas to the AI services that mark it, and stored with your account in Australia. It is yours to delete at any time.

Who processes it. To produce your mark, your essay is sent to third-party AI providers named in our Privacy Policy. Providers processing information on our behalf are only permitted to use it to provide their service to us.

Training. Where a provider offers the option, we direct them not to retain your content or use it to train their models.

Where it is stored, and where it is marked. Your account and study data are stored in Australia. For marking, AI providers process data on servers located outside Australia, primarily in the United States. We do not use AI providers based in China.

What we do not do with it. We do not sell your personal information, we do not use your essays to publicly identify you, and we do not send your essays or other free-text study content to analytics.

Access. We take reasonable steps to protect it — including restricting access and using reputable infrastructure providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Deleting it. We keep it while your account is active. Delete your account from settings and the personal information associated with it is deleted, except where we are required to retain certain records to comply with our legal obligations or to resolve disputes. You can download a copy of your data at any time.

If you stop before your account is made. Using the free essay tool creates an account with your agreement. Once your account is created, your essay and report are account information. If an account is not created, we hold your email, essay and report only to produce your report, and delete that record automatically after 90 days.

How the free marking works

Your essay is marked independently by two AI Judges — the same two-Judge system used inside Aptavia. ACER scores each real Section II response independently three times; two independent reads is our version of the same idea, and the two scores are cross-checked against each other. The essay comes back annotated line by line: what earned marks, what lost them, and the single change that would lift your score most.

The six sub-criteria are ours, not ACER's

ACER publishes two broad criteria for Section II — the quality of the thinking about a topic, and the control and use of language demonstrated in articulating it — and no marking rubric. The six sub-criteria on your report are this platform's own instrument, built from those two published criteria, with what each level on our reported scale means fixed by written reference essays our Judges are shown — never by a real ACER result, because ACER releases none. We publish the consistency evidence for it. ACER has not authorised them, and anyone selling you “the official ACER rubric” is guessing — there isn't one.

Why is only the first essay free?
