Sitting the GAMSAT in March 2027? A month-by-month plan from November, built on what ACER has published so far — and honest about what it has not.

If your next GAMSAT is the March 2027 sitting, November is the month to start. Not because anything is urgent yet, but because November to March is roughly four months — a comfortable runway when it begins on time, and a tight one when it begins after the summer holidays.
This is a plan for that runway, month by month. It is built on what ACER has actually published about March 2027 so far, and it says plainly where that runs out.
What ACER has published about March 2027
| Item | Published? | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| March 2027 registration | Month only | Registrations open November 2026 |
| Registration day | Not yet | — |
| March 2027 test dates | Not yet | — |
| How to register | Yes | Create an ACER account, register through it, pay online |
| Deferral | Yes | To the following March or September sitting, with its own details and fees |
When we read ACER's registration page on 19 October 2026, the entry for March 2027 said one thing: registrations open November 2026. No day, and no test dates. So this plan is written in months rather than dated weeks, and every step that depends on a date says "once ACER publishes it". ACER's key-dates page, not this post, is the authority — re-read it before you commit to anything.
Why November rather than January
The difference between a November start and a January one is not mainly hours. It is order. Starting now lets you measure before you plan, build the science before you time it, and absorb the December break without losing the thread. Starting in January compresses all three into one stretch, and the first to go is usually the measuring — which is the step that tells you where the hours should go.

Each month has one job. November measures. December builds foundations. January puts method under a clock. February rehearses the whole thing and reviews it. The final fortnight protects what you have rather than adding to it. If you start late, keep the order and shorten each stage; do not skip the first.
November: measure before you plan
- 1
Timed set, each reasoning paper
Before reading any strategy.
- 2
One essay under the clock
30 minutes, an unseen set.
- 3
Name each miss
Knowledge, misread, reasoning or timing.
- 4
Set your hours
What you can keep through February, not this week.
Sit one timed practice set for each reasoning paper before you read any strategy, and write one essay under the clock. The score matters less than the misses: for each one, name whether it was knowledge, a misread, the reasoning or the timing, because each has a different fix. Our post on reviewing a question you got wrong gives that method in full. Then decide how many hours a week you can keep through February, not how many you could manage this week.
Register when it opens, and read the terms first
| ACER publishes | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Three steps: ACER account → register → pay online | Create the account now; register the day it opens |
| Fee: AUD$568 · €378 · £296 | The figure listed when we checked — confirm it when you register |
| Preparation materials available for 12 months from registration | Registering early gets you ACER's own material sooner |
| Deferral to the following March or September sitting | Possible, with its own details and fees |
| Refunds to a deadline, under a narrow policy | Read the policy before paying, not after |
ACER's process is three steps: create an ACER account, register to sit the GAMSAT through it, and pay online. Registering early has one practical benefit beyond securing a place — ACER's preparation materials become available to you, and ACER states they remain available for 12 months from the date the registration was completed. Before you pay, read the deferral and refund terms on the same page. Deferral to the following March or September sitting is possible, with its own details and fees; refunds run to a deadline under ACER's refund policy, and that policy is narrow.
December: foundations, with the break planned in
| Strand | December's work | Why now |
|---|---|---|
| Sciences | First-year chemistry, physics and biology scaffold | It counts twice, and foundations take longest |
| Arithmetic | Fractions, powers of ten, estimation — no calculator | The sciences paper allows none |
| Humanities | Daily reading of argued prose | Reading speed builds slowly |
| The break | A lighter fortnight, chosen in advance | A planned dip beats an unplanned gap |
The sciences paper counts twice in the overall, so December's main work is a first-year scaffold in chemistry, physics and biology — enough to read a Sciences stimulus quickly, not to recite a textbook. Alongside it, arithmetic without a calculator, and daily reading of argued prose for Humanities. Plan the holidays deliberately: a lighter fortnight that you chose is far better than a three-week gap that happened to you.
January: put the method under a clock
62 / 100 min
Humanities: about 97 seconds a question, reading included
75 / 150 min
Sciences: a two-minute average, no calculator
2 × 30 min
Written Communication: two essays in the sitting
Weekly
January's essay cadence, up from fortnightly
January is when practice becomes timed. The humanities paper is 62 questions in 100 minutes, about 97 seconds each with the reading included; the sciences paper is 75 questions in 150 minutes, a two-minute average with no calculator. Shorter timed sets, reviewed properly, build pacing faster than occasional long ones. For Written Communication, move from an essay a fortnight to one a week.
February: rehearse the whole thing, then review it
Two or three full papers, reviewed properly
February's unit is the full timed paper. Two or three, each reviewed for as long as it took to sit, will teach you more than a stack sat and skimmed. The review is where the practice turns into progress: look for the misses that repeat, and spend the following week on those rather than on the next mock.
The last fortnight: protect, do not cram
From roughly the final fortnight, the job inverts. New content stops being worth what it costs in sleep and confidence; light timed sets, rest and settled logistics are worth more. Our exam-week checklist covers that stretch, and every logistical detail — reporting times, identification, what is allowed at your desk — belongs to ACER's instructions for your booking.
The weighting decides the split
ACER's overall weights the sciences paper twice: (Humanities + Writing + 2 × Sciences) / 4. That is the honest case for giving Sciences the largest share of your hours. It is not a case for neglecting the other two — each is still a quarter of the overall, and a weak Humanities or essay costs exactly as much as it looks.
Where the hours go, month by month
| Month | Sciences | Humanities | Written Communication | Full papers + review |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | ~35% | ~20% | ~15% | ~30% (the diagnostic) |
| December | ~55% | ~25% | ~20% | — |
| January | ~45% | ~25% | ~20% | ~10% |
| February | ~30% | ~15% | ~15% | ~40% |
The mix shifts as the months pass: foundations early, timed reasoning in the middle, full rehearsal at the end. The proportions below are illustrative, not a prescription — your November misses should move them.
If you sat in September
Sat in September? Start anyway
September 2026 results are expected in mid-November, on a day ACER has not published. You do not need the number to start: the November work above is useful either way, and costs little if you turn out not to need it. When the result lands, our post on the March or September re-sit decision walks through the choice.
Check which intake a March result feeds
| Fact | Source | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A September 2026 sitting feeds the 2028 intake, not 2027 | GEMSAS | Expect a March 2027 result to feed a later cycle still — confirm it |
| An Australian result is valid for four years | ACER | One strong sitting can support more than one cycle |
| UK and Ireland: usable sittings stated per cycle | ACER's admission pages | Check the page for your country |
A sitting feeds an admissions cycle, and the cycles do not always line up with the calendar. GEMSAS has confirmed that a September 2026 sitting does not feed the 2027 intake but does feed 2028; a March 2027 result arrives later still, so confirm which cycle it is accepted for with GEMSAS or the schools you are applying to. An Australian result is valid for four years. In the UK and Ireland the usable sittings are stated per admission cycle — check ACER's admission page for your country.

Key takeaways
- When we checked on 19 October 2026, ACER said only that March 2027 registrations open November 2026 — no day and no test dates yet.
- November to March is roughly four months; starting now is about doing the work in the right order, not about urgency.
- November measures: a timed set for each reasoning paper and one essay, with every miss given a cause.
- Register when it opens: ACER's preparation materials stay available for 12 months from registration — read the deferral and refund terms first.
- December builds science foundations and no-calculator arithmetic, with the holiday break planned as a lighter fortnight.
- January puts method on a clock; February is two or three full papers, each reviewed as long as it took to sit.
- Sciences counts twice in ACER's overall, so it earns the largest share of hours — not all of them.
- Confirm which intake a March 2027 result feeds with GEMSAS or your schools; an Australian result is valid for four years.
